How to wash and care for mulberry silk?

Hoe verzorg je zijde?May 16, 20252 min read

Mulberry silk is a luxurious, natural fiber that needs to be treated with care to preserve its softness, shine, and skin-friendly properties. Whether you choose hand washing or machine washing: with the right approach, your silk pillowcases will remain beautiful and effective for years to come.

Hand washing is the safest and most silk-friendly method. Here's how to do it right:

  1. Use lukewarm water (max. 30°C), hot water damages the fibers.

  2. Use a silk or wool detergent, not regular detergents, bleach, or vinegar.

  3. Gently submerge, let soak for 3–5 minutes, move gently through the water.

  4. Do not rub or wring, this can damage the fibers.

  5. Rinse well with clean water, until all soap residue is gone.

  6. Gently press out the water, then lay flat on a towel to dry.

  7. Air dry, avoid direct sunlight and never tumble dry.

Tip: Don't want to iron? No problem. Wrinkles often disappear on their own during sleep.

No time for hand washing? You can also machine wash mulberry silk, provided you do it correctly:

  1. Choose a delicate or silk program, maximum 30°C, maximum 400 rpm.

  2. Use a laundry bag, protects the fabric from friction with other clothes.

  3. Use a silk detergent, without enzymes or bleach.

  4. Wash with similar colors, silk may bleed slightly during the first wash.

  5. Never tumble dry, lay flat to dry on a towel, out of the sun.

With proper care, your mulberry silk pillowcases will not only remain beautiful, but will also retain their skin and hair-friendly effects. A small effort for a big difference in sleep comfort and care.

Want to know how often you should wash them? On average, every 1 to 2 weeks is perfect, depending on your skin type and whether you sleep with skincare products.
